Late businessman and Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband Sunjay Kapur died on June 12 after suffering a heart attack during a polo match in England. Following his death, an old interview with his third wife, Priya Sachdev, has been doing the rounds, in which she spoke about her bond with Sunjay and Karisma’s children — Samaira Kapoor and Kiaan Kapoor.
Speaking on the YouTube channel Kin and Kindness, Priya opened up about Sunjay’s previous marriage with Karisma and how he would frequently travel from Delhi to Mumbai, where Karisma and their kids lived. She recalled meeting Sunjay on a flight while he was traveling, and how the two became friends — a friendship that eventually led to their marriage after his divorce from Karisma.
She said, “Sunjay’s previous marriage was not a conventional marriage. He had two beautiful children from that marriage. We love them dearly and today we are one beautiful blended family.”
Priya revealed that after her marriage to Sunjay, her daughter Safira from her previous marriage to Vikram Chatwal moved in with them. Reflecting on that time, she admitted it was not easy at first. “It wasn’t easy because he would tell me that these are the rules of my house and Safira should follow them, and I asked him to talk to her directly and build their own relationship, which they did. They have a beautiful relationship now and are very close.”
Explaining the dynamics of their household, Priya said, “We have four children — Samaira, the oldest, then Safira, Kiaan, and my and Sunjay’s son, Azarias. It’s a blended family.” Speaking about her relationship with Karisma’s children, Priya shared, “When my son Azarias was born, he was the glue. He brought the family together because he is half them and half Safira. Our two daughters are very close — Samaira and Safira. We all have grown to love and appreciate each other.”
She added, “I can never be their mother but I know I have a space in their world and their hearts. We talk about all sort of fun, frivolous, and serious stuff. I have a bond with them.”
During the conversation, Priya also spoke about Sunjay’s obsession with polo. She revealed that she and their children would move to England for a portion of the year when Sunjay played polo there. She said, “He is still passionate about Polo. He plays professional 22 High Gold Polo in England. So, as a family, we move there and it just happened that my daughter’s boarding school there is just 15 minutes away. We put our little boy in two different schools. He has to do different schools in India and in England. Then we move back here as a family because business is here.”
