Superman first reactions: The James Gunn film is ‘bold yet faithful’ as DC studios embarks on a new journey | Hollywood News

After several tumultuous years, it seems that DC is finally making a comeback to the mainland, and it is sailing on the back of the Superman film with James Gunn as its captain. The first reactions for the film are finally in, and even though it was always going to be quite a tall task, it seems that Gunn and his Superman, David Corenswet, might have cracked what it takes to ensure the return of DC to the big leagues.

Ever since the Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy writer James Gunn took over DC alongside Peter Safran, hopes were running high that the superhero space might again start to flourish due to competition between the studio and Marvel. But after many complained about poor VFX in the trailer, doubts started to creep in about whether David Corenswet would be able to pull off the role of Kal-El or not. Fortunately for both Corenswet and Gunn, the first reactions for the film are quite good; the critics seem to love the treatment of the story. Popular film critic Bryan Sudfield wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Superman soars with heart, humour, and style—a bold yet faithful take on the iconic hero. James Gunn sets a fresh tone while honouring the character’s legacy, and David Corenswet shines with sincerity and strength. A promising, thrilling start to DC’s new era.”

Many appreciated the unmatched chemistry between David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane). A user on X said, “Superman is a winner. I have complaints with the Marvel levels of CGI. But James Gunn has crafted a splashy, colourful superhero film with tremendous characters. Mr Terrific stole the movie for me. Corenswet and Brosnahan shine: I can watch an entire film on their chemistry alone.” Most reactions on social media have been singing the same tune, calling the film ‘an experience which felt like ripping open a comic book and feasting on its wild and chaotic imagination.” This obviously paints a rather hopeful picture for Superman’s worldwide release and the future of the studio, along with its biggest superhero, the Caped Crusader.

Directed by James Gunn, the cast of Superman includes Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Maria Gabriela De Faria, and more. Based on the original characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, it will release worldwide on June 11.
