Madhuri Dixit was one of the most famous stars in the country when she decided to give it all up in 1999 and move to the US to be with her husband, Dr Shriram Nene. Back then, Madhuri decided to give up her work and live a life of domesticity, which also included waking up at the crack of dawn to make breakfast for her husband. She even carried a physical cookbook with her so she could prepare food for him, even though she didn’t succeed in being a good cook at once.

In an earlier chat with Simi Garewal on her chat show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal. Madhuri shared that she would wake up at 5:30 am to make breakfast for her husband because he had to go to the hospital. Dr Nene used to practice as a cardiothoracic surgeon. “I used to wake up at 5:30 am, make breakfast for him. Of course, he used to leave for work and I would go back to sleep for some time,” she said.

When asked about cooking, Madhuri shared that she “surprised” herself a lot of times, and Dr Nene was surprised too. “There were a few goof ups too but he was sweet,” she said as she recalled that she did not realise that the prawns that are sold in the US are pre-cooked, so when she made a curry with masala prawns, she continued to cook them to a point that they became chewy.

“It’s an Indian book that I carried with me and I made some masala prawns for him,” she shared and added, “I kept cooking them. They were so chewy like rubber and he ate them. He couldn’t swallow them.” Madhuri shared that soon after their marriage, she saw Dr Nene at work and said, “He saves so many lives, I have just entertained them. Their lives are in his hands, what he does impacts the society far more than what I do.”

Madhuri Dixit moved to the US in 1999 and stayed there for over a decade. She appeared in a very few films during that phase but eventually moved back to India in 2011 as Dr Nene gave up his practice in the US.
