After Matty Healy’s mother, Denise Welch’s, appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, an insider has revealed how things really panned out between Taylor Swift and her short-lived romance with Healy. Earlier, Denise shared her take on the Cruel Summer singer’s habit of writing songs about her exes, saying, “Not being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost.” The statement alone sparked backlash online, with the singer’s massive fandom rushing to defend her and claiming they felt attacked. However, while speaking to US Weekly, an insider close to the situation said, “She’s still a mum at the end of the day. Any mother would feel the same. Multiply that by a million because of how famous Taylor is.”

Taylor Swift ‘broke’ Matty Healy’s heart, not the other way around

Last year, Swift released her The Tortured Poets Department, which many believe has several songs about Matty. Given the singer’s reputation of writing about her past relationships, many had come to think that Healy broke her heart. Later, in a report by Us Weekly, a source close to the family said Denise was deeply hurt by the situation and felt it was unfair. “It’s a horrible thing to have the most famous person in the world say your son broke her heart when it was actually the other way around — and then you can’t even defend yourself,” the source said.

The insider explained that the family genuinely believed things with Taylor were heading somewhere serious, and said that Denise’s statement wasn’t something random, as Healy himself thought it might get to that point. “You can’t blame a mum for standing up for her child,” they said, and called their split “terrible” for Healy. They added, “The reality star is still Matty’s mum at the end of the day, and it was bloody hard for her to stay quiet during the whole ordeal.” They continued, “Now that time has gone by, she’s saying what she can because she knows that her son got hurt.”

Matty and Taylor were spotted out multiple times in 2023, right after her breakup with long-rumoured romance Joe Alwyn. The 1975 frontman was seen circling her Eras Tour more than once, while the duo were spotted on multiple dinner dates, walking out of her NYC place, and even backstage at her shows. He was even filmed mouthing “This one’s about you” during a performance. Fans were watching every move. But the romance was short-lived, and soon after, Swift’s relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce blew up. Later, following her 14th Grammy win, the singer dropped TTPD, and fans quickly pointed to songs like Guilty as Sin?, The Black Dog, and But Daddy I Love Him is about Matty. The singer, for his part, never said anything about Swift. In a podcast interview, he said he’d be lying if he wrote songs about “casual” romances just because he was famous. He is now engaged to model and actress Gabbriette Bechtel.
