Superman Box Office Collection Day 1: Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and for director James Gunn, that crown might be feeling a lot lighter now that his new Superman film has opened to positive reviews and strong box office results. The film earned Rs 7 crore in nett in India on its opening day, which puts it in a great position for the upcoming weekend. Superman should make around Rs 20 crore over the weekend, easily beating Rajkummar Rao’s new release, Maalik. Interestingly, Brad Pitt’s high-octane and drama-filled F1 had earned Rs 5.5 crore nett on its opening day in India.
While Superman might have managed to beat F1, it fell short of Jurassic World Rebirth’s opening day haul of Rs 9.2 crore. The film made more than Rs 50 crore in its first week of release in India. Starring David Corenswet, Superman, also fell drastically short of Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which made Rs 16.5 crore on its opening day in India.
The occupancy rates of Superman averaged out at 24.96% on day one, with the evening and night shows carrying most of the burden. The morning and afternoon shows had rates of 15.62% and 18.58%, while the evening and night shows had rates of 26.97% and 38.66%. While its opening day performance in India is commendable, Superman is having much more success on the worldwide angle. According to Deadline, the movie had the biggest box-office preview collection of this year at $21 million.
Initially, some reports claimed that Warner Bros will only consider Superman a success if the movie makes over $700 million. Since then, Gunn has refuted the existence of any such parameters being set by the studio. Thanks to positive reviews and fan support, the film could re-launch DC’s superhero slate. Gunn and his co-studio head Peter Safran have the additional responsibility of launching the DC Universe with Superman.
