Actor Kajol was just 24 when she married actor-producer Ajay Devgn, and, as per her own admission, she had no idea what she was supposed to do as she stepped into a new world of responsibilities. In a new interview, Kajol recalled this phase of her life and said that she was “really young” and had no idea why she had to address Ajay’s mother, her mother-in-law, as “mummy.” Her mother-in-law didn’t insist upon this, and left her to decide for herself how she wants to address her.
In an interview with Nayandeep Rakshit, Kajol shared, “I really didn’t know what I was doing. I was just 24 years old when we got married so I was really young. And I had no idea what I was supposed to do, who I was supposed to be, kya karna hai, kya banna hai, voh sab pata hi nahi tha mujhe ki kaise baat karni hai (what to do, how to be, I had no idea that how am I even supposed to talk).”
Kajol then shared that the idea of addressing Ajay’s mother as “mummy” felt strange. “‘Aunty ko mummy bulana padega? Kyu? Par meri ek maa already hai. (Aunty will be addressed as mummy? Why? I already have a mother.)’ And she was quite cool about it. She never insisted that you will have to call me mummy since you are a daughter-in-law now. Never said that to me. She said when it happens, it will happen on its own, and it happened,” she shared.
Recalling her mother-in-law’s support, Kajol also shared that she was one of the fist people to encourage her to resume working after the birth of her daughter, Nysa. “She was also one of the first people, after Nysa was born, to tell me that ‘kaam pe jana hai beta toh tu kaam ke baare mein zaroor sochna, hum hai na ghar pe sambhalne ke liye. Hum kyu hai? Hum hai na yahan pe. Toh tereko kaam karna hai toh tereko zarur kaam karna chahiye’. (If you wnat to work, then you have to think about it, we are at home to take care of the house. Why are we here? We are here. So if you want to work, then you must.)”
Kajol’s new film, Maa, was released in theatres on Friday.
