Anurag Basu’s musical romance Metro… In Dino is slowly but surely making its presence felt at the domestic box office. After seeing a massive drop on its first Monday, the film saw a slight rise on Tuesday. However, it’s still performing less than the Hollywood release of last week, Gareth Edwards’ action adventure thriller Jurassic World Rebirth. On Tuesday, Metro… In Dino earned Rs 2.9 crore, a marginal spike from its Monday earnings of Rs 2.5 crore. That was a massive drop from its Sunday collection of Rs 7.25 crore, its highest single-day earnings so far. After opening on Friday at Rs 3.5 crore, it saw an increment on Saturday at Rs 6 crore.
As per Sacnilk, the total box office collection of Metro… In Dino in India currently stands at Rs 22.15 crore. A day after surpassing the lifetime domestic earnings of Sonu Sood’s directorial debut Fateh (Rs 18 crore), it’s now raced ahead of those of Kangana Ranaut’s period political drama Emergency (Rs 20 crore).
Metro… In Dino is also the top choice for Hindi moviegoers now. It’s weighing heavy on the two holdover Hindi releases — RS Prasanna’s coming-of-age sports comedy Sitaare Zameen Par, starring Aamir Khan, which earned Rs 1.85 crore on Tuesday, and Vishal Furia’s mythological horror film Maa, starring Kajol, which collected only Rs 85 lakh on the same day.
It’s also raced ahead of the India earnings of Joseph Kosinski’s Hollywood action thriller F1, starring Brad Pitt, which earned Rs 2.75 crore on Tuesday. But it’s still behind the other dominant Hollywood release which opened in cinemas the same day as Metro… In Dino did last Friday on July 4. Jurassic World Rebirth, starring Scarlett Johansson, earned Rs 4.25 crore in India on Tuesday.
Starting this Friday, July 11, Metro… In Dino will face fresh competition from Pulkit’s action drama Maalik, starring Rajkummar Rao and Manushi Chhillar. While Rajkumar’s blockbuster from last year, Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy Stree 2, became the first Hindi film to enter the Rs 600 crore club film in India, his latest release Bhool Chuk Maaf also collected Rs 75 crore at the domestic box office.
This Friday will also see the release of Shanaya Kapoor’s debut film Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan, also starring Vikrant Massey. Since Hollywood is dominating the Indian box office now, one can’t count out James Gunn’s superhero reboot Superman, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, a retelling of America’s most beloved superhero, which will also release in Indian cinemas this Friday.
