If Sydney Sweeney’s PR team wasn’t panicking for the last two weeks, they should definitely start doing so now. The Euphoria actor, who already found herself on the receiving end of a lot of backlash for her new ad campaign with American Eagle, has now given the public more reason to throw some shade at her. An old video of Sweeney showing off her shooting skills at a gun range recently went viral as she found a new fan in US President Donald Trump.
Amid all the backlash Sweeney and American Eagle faced, reports came out suggesting that she was a registered Republican. Just a few hours later, Trump put out a post on Truth Social, congratulating the actor on her new ad. The post read, “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves’. Go get ‘em, Sydney!” He then went on a tangent about car manufacturer Jaguar and ended the post saying, “Look at the woke singer Taylor Swift. She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became NO LONGER HOT. The tide has seriously turned. Being WOKE is for losers; being Republican is what you want to be.”
The American Eagle controversy
This all started when American Eagle dropped a new campaign featuring Sydney, and the ad made a play on the words ‘genes’ and ‘jeans’. The slogan ‘Sydney Sweeney has great genes’ did not exactly sit well with the internet, and people called out the actor and the brand for putting out supremacist messaging and supporting eugenics. The brand shut down all the criticism, and some users on the internet pointed out that as long as the sales are increasing, any kind of publicity is great. Trump’s support for the brand has certainly helped their position in the market, as their stock prices have gone up 23% since his comments.
Sydney is yet to comment on any facet of this long-drawn-out episode and her actual political affiliation.
