Vikrant Massey has often opened up about how his family doesn’t follow any particular religion. The actor, who welcomed his first child, son Vardaan, has now revealed that he and his wife Sheetal left the religion column on his birth certificate blank. During a podcast with Rhea Chakraborty, Vikrant spoke about how he wants his son to have the liberty to choose his own religion.
“I think religion is a personal choice. For me, it’s a way of life. I think everyone has the right to choose their religion. Mere ghar pe har prakaar ke religion aapko milenge. I think religion is man-made. Mai pooja karta, gurudwara bhi jaata hun, dargah bhi jaata hun (I offer prayers, I go to the gurdwara, and I also visit dargah). I get peace with all of this,” he explained.
The actor shared that he has faith and thanks God everyday for all that he has received and for keeping him safe. He talked about how he doesn’t want his son to discriminate against people based on their religion or caste. “On the birth certificate of my baby boy, we left the space for religion blank. So when his birth certificate came from the government, there was no religion stated on it. Toh yeh nahi hai ki sarkaar aapko bolti hai likhna padega (So it’s not like the government forces you to write it). It depends on you. The moment we got his birth certificate, I put a dash in the religion column. I will be so heartbroken if I realise my son is treating anyone on the basis of the practices they follow. I am not raising my son that way,” he said.
Talking about his inter-faith roots in an interview with Sushant Sinha earlier, Vikrant had said, “Our family celebrates everything very proudly. My parents live with me and my wife. My wife is a Rajput Thakur. If you look at it from the point of view of religion, we believe in everything. We go and celebrate Eid at our friends’ houses, we celebrate Christmas with dad. Now Gurupurab is coming up so we will celebrate that as well because I believe this is real India.”
He added, “Even in my extended family, my maasi, who is a Sikh, is married to a Muslim man. My cousin is married to a Gujarati man. I have married a Rajput Thakur, so ours is a secular family. My son’s name is Vardaan. We had a naamkaran ceremony for him. We go to a temple. Our house has a temple so there is no one particular religion that is followed.”
Vikrant got married to wife Sheetal Thakur in an intimate wedding ceremony in 2022 and were blessed with Vardaan in February 2024. Meanwhile, on the work front, Vikrant Massey will next be seen in Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, opposite Sanjay Kapoor and Maheep Kapoor’s daughter Shanaya Kapoor, set to make her Bollywood debut. The film will hit the theatres on July 11.
